MILLY JONES
BA FINE ART,
I am concerned with the human condition and its tendencies. We are by nature communal creatures and yet are ultimately solitary, sometimes lost in our own worlds. It is these rare and beautiful moments in time which I try to capture in my art.
Unaware that they are being observed, my subjects are either comfortable or perhaps not in their respective realities.
It is important to me that the subjects are oblivious of their being observed – the moment this happens the ego displays its mask and the truth of that person’s self is lost to me.
I try to capture the essence within each subject, something universal and recognizable. My subjects may often seem humorous on initial viewing but are also quite awkward, lonely or even melancholic. Paradoxically the colours are bright and uplifting. Although my subjects are not societies ‘model-types’, I find beauty in the honesty they portray.
After having completed my art degree in 1998, I took off to encounter my other passion in life – travel. Whilst traveling I documented my movements in sketches and sold paintings in
My paintings are bold expressions of colour, shape and mood. I am concerned with the formal qualities of painting and its processes. A painting is constructed and deconstructed many times over, often with little or no conscious decision of my own, while the work takes on a life of its own. Painting is, for me, a true expression of freedom.
Although I enjoy painting figures predominantly, I have worked on a series of landscapes, portraiture and murals and have most recently undertaken a series of cows (moos) which I find to hold a uniquely solumn and mystical quality which entrigues me.
I am open to any new projects, commissions or feedback.
